Cambodia denies sheltering Thai red-shirt suspect

A senior Cambodian military official has denied a Thai red-shirt leader wanted in connection with alleged arms deals is hiding in Cambodia, as reported in Thai media.
Thailand is set to issue an arrest warrant for five people including Jakrapob Penkair, a former minister in Thaksin Shinawatra’s government and a leading red-shirt figure, who Thai authorities believe is living in exile in Cambodia.
The warrant also implicates former Thai 3rd Army deputy chief Major General Manas Paolik for alleged links with the recent discovery of a huge arms cache in Chachoengsao, according to the Bangkok Post.
Mr Jakrapob posted on his Facebook page to deny the accusation, describing it is groundless speculation, and saying his way of fighting was to uphold democracy without bearing arms.
Defence Ministry spokesman General Chhum Socheat denied any Thai suspects wanted in relation to the arms cache were hiding in Cambodia.
“We don’t have any information about this person in Cambodia,” said Gen Socheat. “He is not in Cambodia.”
In addition to Mr Jakrapob and Maj Gen Manas, the remaining suspects are Watana Sapwichien, Somjet Kongwatana and Chaiwat Polpho, aka Peak Kalamae.
A Thai source earlier claimed the weapons found in a rice field over the past week were linked to the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship organisation and political unrest in 2014.
Thailand’s national police chief Chakthip Chaijinda brushed aside criticism that authorities staged the discovery of the weapons as an excuse not to lift the ban on political parties’ activities in the near future.
